My name is Scott.
Who I Am is not where I’m from, nor is it what I’ve experienced and accomplished.
Having said that, I also recognize that in order to help you see I’m qualified to accompany you on your life journey, I need to give you some background.
Many people dream of winning the lottery. I won my first lottery at the ripe old age of 4 months. I was born in 1969 and adopted when I was 4 months old, by a second generation Lithuanian-American family. Though I wouldn’t realize it until much later, I had won the “parent lottery.”
I was always a dreamer. Never able to settle for what I had, or what was. I spent more than half my life trying to ‘crack the code.’ Not only did I want to experience life to the fullest, but I also felt life was a mystery, waiting to be unraveled. I thought the faster I moved, the quicker I would get to the answers.
Once I figured out that the Mystery that life really is cannot be “unraveled,” I was able to relax into what is, and to just be present and enjoy the journey.
My background is varied. You could say I tried a bit of everything. From working as a dishwasher, then a waiter, and flipping burgers at McDonald’s, I jumped into 13 years in the Air Force where I worked with the Chaplain Service, as well as writing and teaching courses.
I also consulted for some Fortune 500 companies, worked as a computer programmer on Wall Street, originated loans for a mortgage company for five years, and then found myself in Costa Rica for 15 years. (Not to mention the gourmet popcorn store, coffee shop, barbershop, bar and restaurant, the reality TV show, and many other adventures along the way!)
In Costa Rica I designed and managed projects across the country to help people, animals and the environment. I welcomed over 3,000 international volunteers and trained them to help me with these projects. Then the government asked me to step in and help with the growing issue of the commercial sexual exploitation of minors. Basically, lots of parents are selling their kids into prostitution. And it’s making a big mess. (A story for a future article I suppose!)
I’ve had huge wins — and crushing losses. Over and over. I no longer have big highs and plummeting lows. My life is in balance, and I’ve never felt better. It’s like all my life’s experiences have culminated into waking me up to who I really am. I wish it didn’t take 50 years. But we can’t change the past.
The present moment, however, we can take charge of.
I’ve been in several relationships. My first partner killed himself. Another one died of a heroin overdose. I’ve lost countless friends over the years, including a few who were murdered. I’ve lost both my parents. I’ve been hospitalized countless times, had six surgeries, and had a few tropical diseases I’m not sure how to spell.
I went through a long period of horrible depression, panic attacks, anxiety attacks, suicidal thoughts. I’ve felt completely lost. Alone. Despite all that, I came out on the “other side” no worse for wear. But certainly much more experienced.
I hold a B.A. in Spiritual and Social Psychology from the University of Massachusetts (Amherst), and completed my graduate work in Spiritual Psychology from the University of Santa Monica.
I now live in Tucson, Arizona and still work in Costa Rica as often as I can. I consider myself a “Quaker” (another future article!) and am engaged to be married to an amazing and loving person.
I’m pretty confident that no matter what pain or obstacle you are dealing with, I can relate. I hope you’ll consider letting me walk the journey with you. It would be my pleasure.
